What do Tom Cruise, Scientology, an upcoming flick about the assassination move in Hitler’s Nazi Germany and present-day Germany have in common?
Not a thing, Herr or Fraulein Blog Reader. That is, if the German government would have had it’s way.
The Associated Press reported on Friday that Cruise- a devoted Scientologist- was set to begin filming for the movie, “Valkyrie,” at Bendlerblock, a German memorial to the anti-resistance of Hitler and home to Germany’s Ministry of Defense. Directed by Brian Singer, Cruise plays Col. Claus Graf Schenk von Stauffenberg- a German army officer who was executed for the failed assassination attempt.
The gestank erupted because of Cruise’s Scientology:
“The German government considers Scientology a commercial enterprise that takes advantage of vulnerable people, and some critics have said one of its adherents shouldn’t be playing one of the Nazi era’s few heroes.”
(Geir Molson, AP)
Well, it appears German officials are relenting with permission granted to film at the site. All “dignity” aside, I guess allowing one commercial enterprise to gain at the expense of the other was more profitable I suppose. So, go ahead Tom and have your way with those vulnerable Deutchlanders.

BY THE WAY: Did you know that “Tom Cruise”- from English to German- translates to “Tom Kreuzfahrt?” That’s funny in any country.
