WHY:  Director/Writer James Gray, Joaquin Phoenix and Mark Wahlberg team up again (see 2000’s The Yards), which was selected for the Cannes International Film Festival that year.

WHAT MAY MAKE THIS:  The buzz.  An IMDb user commented that the picture received a standing ovation at Cannes with the European critic’s screening.

Focusing on a New York family with a revered NYPD deputy chief of police (Robert Duvall) tending to an emotional “good-son/bad-son” saga, one son, (Phoenix), has turned away from the police line of work of his family (Duvall and Wahlberg), changed his name and has partied his way into a  nightclub managership that services a late 80’s gangsterism and drugs.  This much necessarily brings him to confront his brother and father as well as his past while elucidating the barest components of choice and consequence.  Should be a treat to see the likes of Phoenix and Wahlberg handle this material.

WHAT MAY BREAK IT:  Though not quite “breaking” it, Eva Mendes may prove the weak link here.  In my estimation, the line is still out as to whether she is a weighty enough actor to float with the aforementioned.  Pretty face?  No doubt about it.  Can she turn in a performance?  It’s possible.  We’ll see what and how she handles what she’s given to do.

CURIOSITY FACTOR:  The standing ovation the flick received at the Cannes International screening for European critics.  Will Night offer a Godfather-esque treatment and invite us in on the emotional undulations circulating around family ties, choice and the consequences that make or break all we hold dear?

LAST TAKE:  We will be talking about this one come February, if not for some of the performances.
