Opening This Weekend…April 4, 2008

Leatherheads - starring and directed by the overrated George Clooney.  With Rene Zellweger and John Krasinski.  Set in 1925, Clooney plays an aging football player who, with his prodigy, vie for the love of journalist Zellweger in a slapstick-type comedy.  I’m sorry, but I am the biggest football fan around, and football and slapstick don’t belong in the same picture, let alone the same sentence.  I’ll pass.

Shine A Light - Martin Scorcese and his enormous eyebrows follow the Rolling Stones on their 2006 “Big Bang Tour.”  I think I’ll pass on this one as well.  Scorcese rocks (pun intended) with gangster flicks, and I’m not much of a Stones fan either.  Strike 2.

Nim’s Island - starring Abigail Breslin, Gerard Butler and Jodie Foster.  Foster plays a fearful author who visits Breslin on her island, along with main character Alex Rover (Butler)  to help find her missing father.  After Foster’s recent turn in The Brave One, I find it difficult to visualize her as a comedic, agoraphobic recluse; however, the critics are raving.

The Ruins - based upon the popular novel by Scott B. Smith (for which I will be looking on eBay momentarily), a group of young, good looking Americans traveling in Mexico find danger when looking for the missing brother of a fellow traveler.  Sounds ominous, doesn’t it?  One of my favorite young actresses, Jena Malone stars.  I’m just waiting for the lines at the theatre to thin.

My Blueberry Nights (limited release) - starring Natalie Portman, Norah Jones, Rachel Weisz and Jude Law in a soul-searching journey by Jones’ character to find the true meaning of love wherein she meets a series of offbeat characters.  Sounds like my college “career” actually.  Um, next…..

Meet Bill (limited release) - with Aaron Eckhardt, Jessica Alba, and Logan Lerman in a critically “unfunny” comedy with yet another mid-life crisis-like reexamination of one’s life…this time, by Eckhardt.  Hmm, I think I’ll pass on this one too.

Current Releases/Top 10 (and my unique witty take on them)

21 - Oh, the blackjack movie.  I’d rather play myself.

Horton Hears A Who - I love Steve Carell, and my kids want to see this.  I can’t wait for the crowds to thin before I endeavor to the theater.

Superhero Movie - Exactly how many spoof movies do we need?

Meet the Browns - Yet another Tyler Perry vehicle…yawn.

Drillbit Taylor - Personally, I cannot stand Owen Wilson (or his nose) and the synopsis for this film seems non-surprisingly recycled.

Shutter - Another remake of a Japanese-inspired horror film.  Sign me up…but only on a day that my husband isn’t working nights.  I get too scared if I have to be alone after watching these types of films, and the dog gets tired of accompanying me to the bathroom to check behind the shower curtain (of course, I’m serious!!  Ask the dog!)

10,000 B.C. - Yet another epic, period, big budget, semi-historical, loaded with special effects film for those who like that sort of thing.  Unfortunately, I don’t.

Stop-Loss - from Boys Don’t Cry director Kimberly Peirce, this film focuses upon a soldier (Ryan Phillippe), home from Iraq, who refuses to return to Iraq pursuant to a government mandate.  Sounds intriguing

College Road Trip - from Disney, Martin Lawrence plays Raven-Simone’s father who accompanies her on a road trip to find the perfect college while keeping an eye on her…hence the name.  Apparently one doesn’t need a college degree to get that one.

The Bank Job - based upon a true British case wherein a group of “unseasoned criminals lured into a heist” to retrieve compromising photographs of a royal princess.  I’ll have to monitor reviews on this before I make a semi-informed decision as to whether I want to see this.  Of course, I can always wait until it is released on Showtime.

Regarding Superhero Movie and the question “how many spoof movies do we need?” I’d say we passed the point of not needing any more when Airplane 2 came out. Honestly, when the producers couldn’t come up with a title more creative than Scary Movie it was obvious that we’d gone too far. And it was followed by three sequels, plus Date Movie, Epic Movie, Not Another Teen Movie…at least the makers of Meet The Spartans came up with a different title. But how are there enough people going to see these films that they continue to be profitable?

“But how are there enough people going to see these films that they continue to be profitable?”

Since parody movies done well are extremely funny, all the people going are those that hope that the latest spoof movie has reclaimed lost glory.

Superhero Movie could have been great (there is mounds of material to lampoon) but alas, another pile of crap . . .
