“Cube” Cubed

I recently had the combined pleasure/horror of viewing “Cube” (1997), “Cube 2: Hypercube” (2002) and “Cube Zero” (2004) on DVD (however, not in that order….I saw “Cube Zero” before “Cube 2″.)  I had wanted to see Cube for years, and actually was unaware that there were sequels/prequels.

While “Cube” was written/directed by Vincenzo Natali, he had nothing to do with the sequels; and this was painfully apparent.

Anyway, I loved Cube.  Despite the melodramatic acting, this film had an original storyline, made great use of its limited budget, and provided intriguing “traps.”  And please, people, stop comparing this film to the “Saw” series (due to the traps, apparently.)  This is almost akin to comparing “Lord of the Rings” to “The Wizard of Oz” because they both have little people and wizards (rolls eyes.)

Then we watched “Cube Zero”, or Cube 3, but since it is a prequel, I suppose since “Cube Negative One” sounded inane, the filmmakers elected to forego the mathematical complications inherent when utilizing both positive and negative integers.  Well, “Cube Zero” didn’t stink up the joint.  It had some interesting moments, some gaping plot holes and an interesting ending which stimulated a modicum of debate.  Unfortunately, one of the lead characters, Zachary Bennett, looked annoyingly like an ex-college-boyfriend of mine and, therefore, provided me with moments of nausea.

“Cube 2: Hypercube” was, um, how shall I phrase this…..HORRIBLE.  Acting which sounded like a rehearsal script reading at midnight at Denny’s coupled with atrocious special effects and a disjointed and convoluted script with one of the worst endings ever.  Luckily, however, I was forewarned and had zero expectations so, essentially, I could say this movie exceeded my expectations.  (Yeah, ha ha ha, I know.)

So, in conclusion:

So do you think they would have been better if they’d starred Ice Cube? Sorry, couldn’t resist…Seriously, I enjoyed Cube but haven’t seen the sequels. And also couldn’t imagine how there could be sequels/prequels without undermining the intent of the original. The original seemed like a cross between 1984 and Six Characters In Search of An Author. It’s not the sort of thing that needs or should even have a follow-up.
