I actually rented “Cloverfield” despite the negative hype I have read. Not taking my usual “let’s read EVERYTHING about the movie on IMDB before watching it” I have to say I didn’t hate it at all. Granted, I am glad I watched it at home, for I could see myself succumbing to extreme motion sickness in a theatre and puking on the floor (almost like I did in “Hostel”; however, I did make it into the bathroom in time. Yeah, yeah, TMI, sorry folks.)
Anyway, the smaller 32″ HDTV flat screen we recently purchased upon which to watch football, coupled with the HDTV DVD player we have, made for a non-nauseous filmwatching experience.
Like I said, I had zero expectations; therefore, I have to say the film exceeded my expectations. Comparisons to “The Blair Witch Project” were a bit odd; albeit likely a result of the handheld camera aspect of them both. The creature was interesting, its “kids” were pains in the tushie (as many kids are these days anyway), and I actually felt a modicum of compassion for many characters (except HUD, the cameraman, and Marlena…she was a bit odd.) As I haven’t been to New York for about 11 years now, I was intrigued that only successful, good-looking twenty-somethings inhabit most of Manhattan.
My husband, who usually likes the more popular fare than do I, remarked, ”It was, uh, OK.” Further prodding elicited a “It was just OK” and a chuckle.
I will have my soon-to-be-13-year-old-daughter (the one who wrote the “Sweeney Todd” entry a few weeks ago) take a gander, and report back with her musings. I don’t think my almost 8 year old daughter will appreciate the utter loudness of it all.

(whoa, that’s a big picture, isn’t it??)
