Horrorfest 2007 - 8 Films to Die For

Is it just me, or were last year’s Horrorfest films infinitely better than this season’s fare?  Granted, I have not viewed them all this season (yet); however, I really have not found even one which I enjoyed.

Of last year’s films:  Reincarnation, The Abandoned, The Gravedancers, The Hamiltons, Dark Ride, Penny Dreadful, Unrest, and Wicked Little Things, I really didn’t dislike any of them.  Among my favorite - Unrest and The Abandoned.  All of these these films were unique in some respect; although there were elements common to the horror genre in its entirety.

Such is not the case this year.  So far, I have seen Borderland, Lake Dead, Crazy Eights, Nightmare Man, and Captivity; and have rented The Deaths of Ian Stone, Mulberry Street, and Frontiers, but as yet have been unviewed.  Captivity (with Elisha Cuthbert) subscribed a bit too much to the torture gore film style which has been gaining widespread popularity (Hostel, Hostel II, Turistas, etc.) and, at least, held my attention, despite some over-the-top campiness.  Crazy Eights (with Tracy Lords and Dina Meyer) was probably my favorite thus far; but in a grouping of poorly-reviewed and frequently non-horrific films, this really doesn’t say much.

I was genuinely scared during the majority of last year’s entries, having to rely on my “take the dog to the bathroom to check behind the shower curtain” coping mechanism; but this year’s films have not been scary.  Gory, yes, but, at least to me, Horrorfest should encompass the existence of some semblance of, well, horror.
