Recently Released -
The Incredible Hulk - Hmmmm. I am definitely NOT a fan of comic book inspired films (although I LOVE Christian Bale as Batman); however, as I equally love Edward Norton and Tim Roth (not to mention the fact that the original Hulk himself Lou Ferrigno voices the Hulk and plays a small role as a security guard), I am debating experiencing this film in the theatre or waiting to rent it. As the top grossing film last weekend, I am leaning slightly toward venturing to the overly noisy local cinema for a peek.
Kung Fu Panda - Yes, I have kids. No, I have no desire to see this film. I am not a Jack Black fan in the least; not to mention being sick to death of talking animal movies. Even my 7 year old daughter has no desire to see it.
The Happening - Now this film is high atop my list. I am a huge M. Night Shaymalan fan, despite not loving a few of his films; however, the way in which his mind works, as well as his artistic vision, is very appealing to me.
You Don’t Mess with the Zohan - Adam Sandler was great on Saturday Night Live, and has done a few alright films; however, it appears he has adopted the Will Ferrell (and Rob Schneider, Dana Carvey, David Spade, Chris Kattan, Molly Shannon, and practically every other recent ex-SNL alumnus) ideology of filming too many slapsticky comedies which tend to attract pubescent males. Not to mention the whole middle eastern terrorist slant has been beaten to death far too many times in recent history. I’ll pass.
Sex in the City - Sorry, folks. I’ve never seen the series; however, fans of the show love the movie.
The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian - According to my almost 13 year old daughter (le gasp!), she felt that it was “pretty good” in story and special effects; however, the acting could have been better. She particularly disliked the romance element between Caspian and Susan (which was NOT in the book AT ALL!! Like OMG!!) The musical score was enjoyable, yet a bit darker than the first film in mood, which complemented the darker tones of the film itself. On a scale of 1-10, she says this film would earn a 7.5. (For comparison’s sake, she gave Indiana Jones a “9 and 3/4s.”
Iron Man - Based upon a comic book, strike one. Robert Downey, Jr., strike two. It is supposed to be the first film in a trilogy, strike three.
What Happens in Vegas - Yet another by-the-numbers romance; this time between the overrated Ashton Kutcher and equally overrated Cameron Diaz. Blah.
Coming Soon -
Get Smart - I have mixed feeling for this one. As a Steve Carell fan, and one who watched Don Adams personify Maxwell Smart, this movie has the potential (as a result of Carell’s immense talent) to be funny; however, it also has the potential to fall into the aforementioned Will Ferrell collection of garbage comedies as well. I loved Anne Hathaway in The Princess Diaries; however, she, too, has big shoes to fill in her portrayal of Agent 99.
The Love Guru - Whoops!! I forgot to add Mike Myers as a proponent of the ex-SNL filmmaking ideology. Aside from Shrek, Myers has not made a decent film in … forever. Again, I’ll pass.
