I have had quite the influx of comments lately criticizing my “movie reviews”; for example, how biased they are, or how I don’t offer enough reasons for my opinions. Well, guess what? This is not a movie review site. This is a blog and, therefore, my opinions are what gets posted (along with the opinions of my junior staff writers.) Therefore, if one wants an in-depth movie review, there are numerous sites available for that: rottentomatoes.com, rogerebert.com, etc.
For example, I had an email regarding my OPINION of “Wanted” - such as why I don’t like Angelina Jolie or comic books. Frankly, it doesn’t matter. The fact remains is that I do. I didn’t state that I don’t like all comic book adaptations (or graphic novels as I am so often reminded) as films, but the majority of them I do. Perhaps because they are not original. In an era of the movie remake, very rarely are there any original ideas emanating out of Hollywood. While I understand that the complexities inherent to comic book adaptations, particularly from a special effects standpoint, are challenging, and while I may respect the endeavors of the filmmakers, I prefer a good ole plot with character development.
Another example - I saw “The Unborn” last night. While the movie itself was horrible (why, Gary Oldman, why??!) due to atrocious acting and laughable dialogue, the story was relatively original, albeit flawed, and had some genuine creepiness and good jump moments (I LOVE jump moments.) Additionally, the open-ended “oh look they can make a sequel if they want to” ending treatment is getting OLD. Actually, the best part of the film for me was listening to Movie-Maven_Jr.’s friend Alix shrieking (at every scary part), “THIS IS NOT A PG-13 MOVIE!!”
Now, if someone wants a more in-depth review, then, as stated earlier, visit a movie review site (or even IMDB.com for that matter - chock full o’ unsubstantiated opinions.)
Thanks for reading!
