It’s Oscar night!!!

So, I’ll just keep a running blog throughout the entire show as opposed to having to remember everything upon which I wish to comment.

First, Hugh Jackman was a fabulous host.  He’s funny and hey, the guy can sing and dance, not to mention Movie_Maven_Jr and I were happy with the eye candy.  I loved his opening number…very clever and funny, and Anne Hathaway’s Nixon was truly inspired.

Having the show at the Kodak Theatre was a change, but I liked the more intimate ambience.  Movie_Maven_Jr_Jr exclaimed, “Hey, that’s the ‘American Idol’ stage!!”  LOL

Why does the Academy continue to impose a time limit on acceptance speeches?  NOBODY pays any attention to them and, therefore, I set my TiVo timer for 5 hours just in case.

Steve Martin and Tina Fey were hysterical.  I think they should write the Oscar show until they die or acquire Alzheimer’s; however, they would both still be funnier than 95% of Hollywood is today.

Did anyone else catch the evil glare that Angelina Jolie was directing at Jennifer Aniston?

I LOVED Natalie Portman’s comment to Ben Stiller about working in a Hassidic meth lab….hilarious!!

I am so thrilled that Heath Ledger won Best Supporting Actor.  While all of the nominees were fabulous, Ledger’s performance was beyond words (and I still think he should have won for ‘Brokeback Mountain’ as well.)  The speeches by his family were very touching and did make me tear up (but I’m such a sap anyway.)

I also really enjoyed the past supporting/leading actors/actresses introducing their respective nominees.  It was a very nice touch.

Most of the stars looked wonderful (Natalie Portman, Kate Winslet and Amy Adams were stunning); however, there will always be those who either do not own a mirror or suffer from extreme body dysmorphic disorder (in reverse) - thinking they look good when they don’t.  Case in point:  Jessica Biel.  What the hell was she wearing?  And it looked like it was on backward.

Wow, Will Smith is ageless, don’tcha think?  He hasn’t changed since ‘Fresh Prince of Bel Air’ except now he can act.

I don’t know about you, but I’m sure craving some saag paneer and chicken tika masala after watching all these ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ clips.  Naan anyone?

So John Mayer did accompany Jennifer Aniston to a public event.  I guess my ‘Life & Style’ magazine is wrong about their alleged breakup.  But I digress; and, apparently am paying way too much attention to the audience shots.

So, not to make light of or minimize the significance of the next topic, but does anyone else use the “In Memoriam” segment of the show to repeatedly ask “OMG, s/he died?”  I swear, I knew of some like Cyd Charisse and Michael Crichton (see earlier posts) and Paul Newman, Bernie Mac, Isaac Hayes, and Sydney Pollack (all fabulously gifted, by the way), but I was not aware that Charlton Heston, Stan Winston and Roy Scheider had passed.

OK, now I’m confused.  Isn’t best director supposed to be AFTER best actor and actress?  At any rate, I’m sure Danny Boyle’s Tigger impersonation was unique.  Congratulations!

OMG Sophia Loren looked mummified.  Lay off the Restalyne please.  She’s only about 15 years older than Meryl Streep who looks amazing.  Oh, and a huge YAY to Kate Winslet and her first win in 6 nominations!!  I absolutely LOVE her and can’t wait to see ‘The Reader’ since I live in a small college town with one theatre that plays extremely long runs of crappy films while neglecting those more worthy.

Why is it men age so much more gracefully?  It’s just so NOT FAIR!!  Congratulations to Sean Penn who is a fabulous and brave actor (well, since ‘Fast Times at Ridgemont High’.)

Let me make a prediction then….’Slumdog Millionaire’ will win best picture after Boyle’s win.  I know, I know, it’s not always the case that best director “predicts” best film, but in this case, and especially after all the hype, I think it will win.

I was right.

Congratulations to all the nominees and winners and thanks to Hugh Jackman for not making the show suck.

Tina Fey and Steve Martin were hilarious, I agree, and so was “Wolverine” with his opening number. My cat, Calypso, was sad because “Milk” didn’t win everything it was nominated for. (Wink, wink, elbow, nudge, get it? milk…cat….hahahaha!) Yay for Heath too!!! I cried too.
